Partnering institutions include UC-Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science and the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center in Burlington, Vermont. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (KeckCAVES) as part of the National Science Foundation-supported LakeViz3D project in which researchers create 3D visualization applications to teach Earth science concepts. The AR sandbox was created by the University of California (UC), Davis', Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) and the UC-Davis W.M. The augmented reality (AR) sandbox enables users to move the sand around to form mountains, lakes and rivers while a 3D camera and digital projector allow them to create virtual topography in real time. Visitors in the Action Lab at the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center in Burlington, Vt., make it "rain" over a virtual world in the "Shaping Watersheds Interactive Sandbox" exhibit.
